Enter and work in confined space

RIIWHS202E – Enter and work in confined spaces

This course prepares learners to assess risk and develop safe working methods for working in confined spaces. This training is suitable for those working in operational roles, who may be in situations where they need to enter and exit confined spaces and carry out work while in the space.

This is a nationally accredited qualification that is recognised in all states and territories of Australia.

Learning outcomes

Students who complete this qualification will gain the skills and knowledge to:

  • Understand and apply safe work methods
  • Understand the effects of irrespirable (unbreathable) environments on the body and the need for appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Monitor and adhere to the allocated entry time
  • Select appropriate rescue equipment for emergencies
  • Tag and lock out
  • Enter and work in a confined space
  • Conduct operational maintenance of equipment

Participants are required to:

  • Wear appropriate PPE: Safety boots, hi-vis shirt/vest
  • Learners can bring their own harness if preferred

Prerequisites and/or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

There are no formal prerequisites for this course, however a solid understanding of workplace health and safety is essential, and it is recommended that the learner has completed HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Experience working in confined spaces under supervision is recommended.

No RPL can be applied to this course.

A range of assessment methods will be used to assess that the learner can:

  • Correctly identify risks and safety requirements associated with entering and working in a confined space
  • Demonstrate compliance with entry and exit procedures on at least two occasions
  • Locate safety data sheets (SDS) and apply the relevant information
  • Implement the requirements, procedures and techniques for entering and working in confined spaces
  • Communicate clearly and concisely with others to coordinate prior to and during work activities

What is a confined space?

A ‘confined space’ means an enclosed or partially enclosed space that:

  • is not designed or intended to be occupied by a person
  • is, or is designed or intended to be, at normal atmospheric pressure while any person is in the space; and
  • is or is likely to be a risk to health and safety from:
    • an atmosphere that does not have a safe oxygen level, or
    • contaminants, including airborne gases, vapours and dust, that may cause injury from fire or explosion, or
    • harmful concentrations of any airborne contaminants, or engulfment.

A confined space is determined by the hazards associated with a set of specific circumstances and not just because work is performed in a small space. Entry into a confined space means a person’s head or upper body is in the confined space or within the boundary of the confined space.

Confined spaces are commonly found in vats, tanks, pits, pipes, ducts, flues, chimneys, silos, containers, pressure vessels, underground sewers, wet or dry wells, shafts, trenches, tunnels or other similar enclosed or partially enclosed structures.

More information on the regulations can be found at Safe Work Australia.

What is a Unique Student Identifier (USI)?

If you study any Nationally Recognised Training in Australia, you are required to have a USI. Your USI links to an online account that contains all your training records and results (transcripts) that you have completed since 2015.

When applying for a job or enrolling in further study, you will often need to provide your training records and results (transcript). The benefit of the USI is the ability to provide learners with easy access to their training records at any time.

You can access your USI account online from your computer, tablet or smart phone.

If you do not already have a USI, go to www.usi.gov.au/students/create-your-usi/ on a computer or mobile device.

Note: A USI must be supplied to CEPUTEC during enrolment so that a Nationally Recognised Qualification or Statement of Attainment can be issued to you.
